Terms of Service
Last updated · 3 June 2026
Plain-English summary
klieg is a movie + TV decision engine. You sign up, log what you watch, get personalised recommendations, share lists with friends. Some of it is free forever; some features are paid. Be decent to other users, follow the law, and we’ll get along fine. If you change your mind about a paid plan within 14 days, ask for a refund and you’ll get one.
The detail below is the binding version of the same thing. Where the law gives you stronger protection than these terms (UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 in particular), the law wins. We don’t try to disclaim things we can’t.
1. Who you’re contracting with
When you use klieg, you agree to these terms with Ajay Patel, a sole trader trading as “klieg”, correspondence address Suite RA01, 195-197 Wood Street, London, E17 3NU. In these terms “we”, “us”, and “klieg” mean us; “you” means you.
2. Eligibility + account
- You must be at least 13 years oldto create an account. If you’re between 13 and 18 (or the age of majority where you live) you confirm that a parent or guardian has reviewed these terms.
- You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure and for everything done from your account.
- One person, one account. Don’t share, sell, or transfer your account.
- We may refuse to create or suspend an account if we reasonably believe these terms have been broken.
3. The service
klieg lets you log what you watch, rate it, take notes, curate lists, share with friends, and receive personalised recommendations powered in part by AI. The free tier (Diarist) gives you unlimited tracking + lists + social features. Paid tiers add AI recommendation capacity and extras.
The catalogue is sourced from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB.
We are constantly improving the service. We may add, change, or remove features. Where a change materially reduces what you’re paying for, we’ll tell you in advance and offer a pro-rated refund if you’d prefer to cancel.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use the service for anything illegal, including harassment, hate speech, or sharing material you don’t have the right to share.
- Try to access another user’s data without permission, or to break the service’s security controls.
- Scrape or bulk-export the catalogue, lists, or user-generated content for commercial use. (Personal export of your own data is fine and supported in settings.)
- Use the recommendation features to generate output you then republish at scale (the AI calls cost real money and the cap is set for personal use).
- Probe, attack, or attempt to disrupt the service or its providers. Responsible-disclosure security reports are welcome at security@klieg.app.
We may suspend or close an account if it’s used in breach of this section, with notice where reasonably possible.
5. Safety, moderation and complaints
klieg protects users from illegal content with layered measures, and this section explains them, how to complain, and how appeals work — including for people who don’t have a klieg account.
- Automated (“proactive”) technology. All public text is automatically checked at posting time (links, email addresses and phone numbers are not allowed), and public reviews are screened by an automated two-stage AI classifier for illegal and prohibited content. Content the classifier confirms as a clear violation is hidden from public view pending any appeal; borderline content is queued for human review and stays visible. Humans make the final decisions.
- Reporting content. Every public review and profile carries a report (flag) control with categories including illegal content. Reports are reviewed promptly, highest-severity first, and content we assess as illegal is taken down swiftly.
- Complaints — including from non-users. Anyone in the UK affected by content on klieg (whether or not they hold an account) can complain by emailing support@klieg.appor writing to the address in section 1. Tell us where the content is and why you’re complaining; we aim to acknowledge within 48 hours and to act swiftly on illegal content.
- Appeals. If your content is hidden or your account is restricted, you’ll see a notice with a one-click way to request human review (or you can email us). Appeals are determined promptly. If we reverse a decision, we restore the content and take steps to ensure our automated systems don’t remove the same content again.
- Complaints about our automated technology. You can complain about the operation of the automated measures above through the same routes; we’ll tell you what action we take. Nothing in this section limits your right to bring legal proceedings.
- Manifestly unfounded complaints. We may disregard complaints that are manifestly unfounded — for example duplicates of an already-determined complaint, spam, or complaints with no arguable basis identified. We review our application of this policy at least annually.
- Proscribed organisations. Accounts we reasonably infer are operated by or on behalf of an organisation proscribed under the UK Terrorism Act 2000 are removed.
6. Paid plans
klieg’s tiers and prices are listed at klieg.app/pricing. Prices are shown in GBP and, where applicable, VAT will be added or shown inclusive at checkout per HMRC rules.
Subscription plans (Critic, Pro) renew automatically each month or year on the same date as your initial signup, until you cancel. Founding Lifetime is a single one-off payment, not a subscription.
You can cancel any subscription at any time from /settings/billing → Manage subscription. When you cancel, your paid features stay active until the end of the period you’ve already paid for; you won’t be charged again.
Payment processing is handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
7. Free trial
Critic includes a 7-day free trial, no card required. If you start your subscription during the trial, you’ll be charged at the end of the trial period. If you cancel during the trial, you’re not charged. Pro and Founding do not include a trial.
8. Refunds + cancellation rights
Under the UK Consumer Contracts Regulations you have a 14-day cancellation right for digital services. We mirror that in our own policy and extend it to one-off Founding payments:
- Subscriptions: within 14 days of your first paid charge, email support@klieg.appand we’ll cancel + refund the most recent charge in full, no questions.
- Founding Lifetime:within 14 days of payment, full refund on request. After 14 days the Founding payment is non-refundable — it’s a one-off whose price reflects the lifetime grant.
- Pro-rated refunds for service changes:if we materially reduce a feature you’re paying for, we’ll refund the remaining unused portion of your billing period if you cancel.
- Outside these windows:we don’t offer routine refunds, but we’ll always look at individual circumstances. Email us.
Refunds are processed via Stripe and typically land back on the original payment method within 5–10 working days.
9. Founding Lifetime — the specifics
- One-off payment, lifetime entitlement. £89 once for the same recommendation entitlement as Critic, for as long as klieg operates.
- First 500 only. When the cap is reached, the tier closes and does not reopen.
- If two payments race past slot 500:in the unlikely event of a concurrent-payment race that takes us past 500, we will honour the extra purchase OR offer a full refund + a comp month of Critic — your choice. We’ll contact you the same day.
- If klieg ceases to operate:the Founding entitlement is tied to the service. We’ll give 90 days’ notice and a data export window if we ever stop operating. Refunds aren’t guaranteed in that scenario but we’ll do what we reasonably can.
- Non-transferable.Founding accounts are tied to the email that paid; they can’t be sold or transferred to another person.
10. Your content + intellectual property
- You own what you create.Notes, ratings, lists, custom slugs — that’s yours. By using klieg, you grant us a non-exclusive licence to store, display, and process this content as needed to run the service for you, and (only where you have explicitly made content public) to display it to other klieg users.
- We own the platform. The klieg name, brand, design, software, and documentation are ours. Don’t copy or reuse them without permission.
- Catalogue data comes from TMDB and remains subject to TMDB’s terms.
11. AI recommendations — what to expect
Recommendations are generated using your watch history and taste via large language models (Anthropic Claude) and vector embeddings (Voyage AI). They are suggestions, not professional advice. We do our best to filter for quality and relevance, but the model can sometimes:
- Recommend something you’ve already seen
- Get a fact wrong about a title
- Miss a constraint you specified in the prompt
- Surface a title that isn’t available on your streaming services
Thumb-down or correct anything you don’t like — the system learns. Don’t use the AI features for professional decisions where a wrong answer matters; that isn’t what they’re for.
12. Service availability
We don’t guarantee 100% uptime — no online service honestly can. We aim to make klieg reliable and to give advance notice of planned maintenance where possible. If there’s a serious outage affecting paid users, we may issue a service credit on request.
13. Disclaimers + liability
klieg is provided to you on an “as is” basis. We don’t guarantee that the recommendations will match your taste, that the catalogue is complete, or that the service will be uninterrupted.
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for:
- death or personal injury caused by our negligence
- fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation
- any other liability that can’t be limited or excluded under UK law
Subject to the above, our total aggregate liability to you for any claim arising out of or in connection with the service is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim — or £100, whichever is greater. We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses (e.g. lost profits, lost data where the data was not held exclusively on klieg).
Your statutory rights as a consumer under the UK Consumer Rights Act 2015 are not affected by anything in this section.
14. Termination
You can close your account at any time from /settings/account. We can close your account if you materially breach these terms or if we’re required to by law, giving you reasonable notice where possible.
When an account is closed, your personal data is deleted within 30 days, subject to the retention exceptions in our Privacy Policy (e.g. billing records HMRC requires us to keep for 6 years).
15. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service evolves or the law changes. We’ll tell you by email or via a banner on the site before material changes take effect. If you don’t accept a change, you can cancel your subscription and / or close your account before it kicks in.
16. Governing law + disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. You and we agree that the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction to hear any dispute — except that if you live in another part of the UK, you may bring proceedings in your local courts.
If you live elsewhere in the world, you may still rely on mandatory consumer-protection laws that apply to you under local law.
